Some of our most colorful rocks

 Lately we have had fun collecting these picturesque rocks. It is amazing how often we spot dentritic rocks lately. A few years ago I would not have known that we could find moss agate around here but now it is quite easy to.

 

 

 

 The above and below are the same rock from different angles. It must be the most colorful rock we have ever found. 

 The above rock is the same as the one below. I had a clue that it might be interesting if I would break it open, but never did I expect to find a rose hidden inside this agate.

This stuff is why rockhounding is never boring. There will always be these special rewards.

We often find red and yellow jasper but red and grey is rare.

I am not sure if these rocks only appear cracked on the outside but they are fascinating.

Knapped petrified wood

 This was a very unusual find. It was spotted by a friend on a historical mound and by the knapping marks it pretty clearly was meant to be a spearhead or blade. If it was suitable for the purpose or not we might never know, as it was broken when found. It seems rather crude. My guess is that since it was a naturally flat rock they must have tried shaping it into a tool.

Rare Find -- Blue agate and more

I did not expect to find a rock this blue in Belize but we did. Actually my daughter found one piece first when rock-hunting on the gravel road that goes by our house. I was so hoping to find a piece as well as I saw it was broken and although i did not really expect to, to my huge surprise I found a bigger piece of the same rock the next day. It looked grey on the road and we could not see the blue until we took it out of water.

Here are more recent finds. They were all picked up on the same gravel road within about 30 minutes.

 It is great to find rocks on our gravel roads as these stones are often already broken so we can see the color without breaking them open. Until they get paved, that is.

Pine ridge rock

Stone or Bone? or both...

 The more I look at at this rock the more I think it looks like a piece of bone. I'll be happy if anyone can tell me if it is.

Variety of jaspers and agates and more

Recently we have gotten more rockhounding done and these photos show some of the results. I have tried to seperate them into the different colors or types of rock they are. If any of these are anything besides plain jasper and agate, please feel free to help me name them.

Yellows

 Browns.

 Red jasper

  This is a brick red and it looks like jasper to me. A very solid rock.

 Some of these black rocks are opaque, others translucent. 

 Moss agates. I love the "trees".

 This color is not that common. 

 I was very surprised to see the shell fossil in this gorgeous agate.

 Even though small, I see a hint of moss in this pink agate.

 Red and yellow is a common combination.

 This photo does not do justice as these rocks are more pink for real. Hopefully i get the lighting better next time.

 These round rocks are all in their natural state. They are found on our gravel roads among other rough rock.

 I noticed that many of these round rocks have a similar layered design. I would welcome any info on how they were formed.

 Striped agates are abundant around here.

This was one of those fine local agates turned into a necklace. It was a special gift from a friend.
