Purple agate

It was a huge delight to find these very purple rock pieces on the road. They were all broken in small pieces but the color is rare and unbelievably gorgeous.

If there is such a thing as a rock hunters heaven this would have been it for me.

We found every shade of red and several shades of blue, yellow and white, pink and gray, multicolored and a bunch of agates, translucent and banded. We found something that looks like blood jasper and mosses. You see the round stones we found in the top left corner. we also picked up petrified pieces and clear quartz crystal.

 These rocks are wet to show better color; but it also makes them appear a deeper blue than they actually are. But we had never before found so many blueish rocks. I found the biggest piece under foot after noticing bluish chips that probably got chipped when the bulldozer rumbled over it. I think I know now how it feels to find gold. Only recently we picked up what was the first deep blue we had ever seen, but either we have now developed an eye for blue, or we have found a source. Let's hope we can snatch some more of these before they are destined to be compacted into a road somewhere. :(

 

 If I can see right, this here is a nine lb. yellow jasper mixed with white. I was not just a little excited to dig this monster out of the ground. I do not know what the inside will look like but all the chips reveal yellow.

More cut agates

For a while I had wanted to get more rocks cut and finally got around to it again.

It is always fun to guess which rocks will turn out beautiful on the inside. This time I was not disappointed.
The biggest rock on the left is 6 1/2 inches.

I have noticed something similar in most of the rocks I have cut. See the circle designs on the surface? Very often rocks that have that on the outside are beautiful on the inside. This is one clue that a rock might be banded or another color. I have a few that are pink inside that have the circles on the outside.

 I showed you the one on the right before, wondering how is was formed. Well, I still wonder. Maybe even more so, as
I found a similar one.

 the one on the left has very similar marks, only finer.

 I see that I have a few followers by now. (thank you guys!) Is there anyone out there that knows more about these rocks than I do? I hope one day someone will venture forth and tell me what they think, or know!

Sometimes we find a unique rock, as the case was with the following rock, found by my son who only picks up rocks of great value to me!

It is clearly a layered rock of some sort. It has a flat surface.

Beautiful Broken Agates & Jaspers

There is nothing quite like walking along a recently graded and compacted road if you want to find broken rocks. These recently found pieces will be added to my to-be-polished rock pile, for when I own a rock tumbler.

 I did not know this country had so much in the way of pink rocks, but we found no shortage of them lately.

Petrified Wood

 

 Petrified wood is usually found in this grey color. It can be found almost anywhere, but an ancient riverbed is a good place to start looking. I found one on a hill though, and some have been found in creeks.

 

Banded (cut) Agate

 After having had these banded rocks for a while, my curiosity got the better of me and I took them to be cut to see how their insides looked. Beautiful!
